Sunday 5th September
Water of Saughs
OS Map 44 9 miles
This is a most attractive valley which is approached through the village of Edzell. We park at NO465717 in a large car park beside the burn. The track we take goes along Glen Lethnot, following the burn for approximately 5 miles, this section including one steep but short ascent. Corries can be seen in the hills above the burn. When the bothy is reached, we turn away from the burn to take the track up the hill, reaching our highest point, Cruys, at 741 metres. From there, a 360° view can be seen stretching from the Lochnagar Group, with Ben Avon in the distance, past Mount Keen and Mount Battock and out towards the coast. From here, we follow a fence to Cairn of Meadows, 687m, after which we go off track towards West Burn – a section for which gaiters could be useful. We reach our original burnside track, but this time take a detour to avoid the steep descent, joining that track on the valley floor and returning to the car park. Please note that there is a notice to say that dogs should be on a lead at all times.
Walkers must wear walking boots, carry WARM and waterproof clothing, hat and gloves and take plenty food and liquids. THESE ARE ESSENTIAL. Be prepared for possible wintry conditions on the top whatever the forecast.
Meet at Culter Village Hall 8.00 am. Return approximately 6pm.
Transport by car – contribution to the drivers.
