Creag Leacach and Glas Maol
Sunday 2nd May 2004
OS sheet: 43
Distance: 10 km
Ascent: 700m
This walk can be wet and boggy in parts and there are some steep sections on rocky terrain where care must be taken.
This is an interesting route taking in Glas Maol and the ridge of Creag Leacach.
Our intended route begins at 138757 and we walk up the grassy track up onto the
ridge of Leacann Dhu, a good landrover track takes us to Meall Odhar and then eastwards to climb a steep stony path to the summit Glas Maol 167766. We then leave Glas Maol and head for a small cairn and then follow a stone wall all the way up along the ridge of Creag Leacach, sometimes exposed in parts to the boulder covered summit 154745. We descend Creag Leacach and walk down to a bealach and follow the burn down to the grassy path back to the car park. The path alongside the burn is badly eroded in parts and care must be taken particularly if it is wet; alternatively we may descend this short section on higher grassy/heather covered ground if conditions are unfavourable.
Walkers must wear walking boots, warm and waterproof clothing, hat and gloves and take plenty food and liquids. THESE ARE ESSENTIAL. Be prepared for wintry conditions. If you prefer the use of walking poles it may be worth bringing them.
