SUNDAY 5 March 2006

O.S. Sheet 44 Length: 9.5 km Ascent: 440m

Having the wonderful name of Sturdy Hill one can almost imagine being marched purposely to the top of this hill!
However we are going to take our time and enjoy this interesting little hill with superb views of Glen Esk, Hill of Wirren and distant views of Lochnagar. We start at 580746 and follow a wide track up hill passing Maoiearn 472m then N.E along the track to meet the boundary fence. At this point we cross over to the trig point at 594780, which unfortunately is the other side of the high deer fence. The route then heads along the fence and takes a sharp northerly turn for about 1.5km. We descend slightly to pick up the track 570772 and make our way down crossing a burn near the foot of the hill. As there is limited bus parking we then have less than a km on road to walk back to our bus. This route can be muddy in places and there will be some off path sections in deep heather. It will also be very cold and exposed at this time of year.

Walkers must wear walking boots, warm and waterproof clothing, hat and gloves and take plenty food and liquids. THESE ARE ESSENTIAL. Be prepared for possible bad conditions on the top whatever the forecast.
