CLUB WEEKEND IN KILLIN
 | |
| Ben Lawers | Beinn Ghlas |
At the end of August our club met in Killin in Perthshire for a weekend away. Everyone had a fantastic time with fabulous hot and sunny weather. Killin is a picturesque village by Loch Tay, an ideal setting for a walking weekend. Our group was accommodated at the Falls of Dochart Inn and at the Fairview Guest House. On our first day we set off with temperatures in the twenties and walked up Beinn Ghlas and Ben Lawers. The views were spectacular looking across to Tarmachan ridge, and surrounding hills. On Ben Lawers summit while we were lazing sleepily in the hot sunshine we were all suddenly awoken by an unusual visit from above, the only strong breeze that came down on us all day! It cleared the area of midges thankfully!
After Ben Lawers some of us continued on and bagged another munro, Meall Corranaich. A couple of us took the steep short cut down and some then returned along the ridge and back down to the Ben Lawers visitor centre by which time most of us could have drunk Loch Tay dry! The following day, again in the blazing heat most of us tackled another Munro, this time Ben Chonzie, with the rest of the group opting for a walk below in the Glen Lednock. It could almost have felt like walking in Spain rather than Scotland! As usual in the evenings we required considerable liquid replenishment often taking until well after midnight to achieve this. Later resulting in some finding navigating home a little challenging!
The weekend was memorable in many ways with lots of laughs and great walking and exceptional weather for this part of the world. I guess now we must be due for a proper winter at long last!
